How to Search contents of The Bulletins, Durbar & The Review

The Database contains the entire runs of The Bulletin (from 1 August 1950), Durbar (from 1984 to 2020) and The Review (1988 t0 2014).

The search engine is designed specifically as a research tool to locate relevant articles identified by keywords or phrases. It is not a tool to search specific issues or to be able to download specific articles or whole Issues in editable text.

Searches can be conducted on the entire database text, or just on article titles in the Contents Lists, by selecting the appropriate option from the Search drop-down menu in the top menu. It is possible to select "all words" or "exact phrase" in the initial search and the results can then be filtered to a specific year or range of years and to MHS (Bulletin), IMHS (Durbar) or NHCRA (The Review) only. . The filters can be removed with the "Reset Filters" links.

The following points may also be helpful:

  • To see the Article Titles in each available issue of The Bulletin or Durbar, go to "Shop" on the top menu and choose "Bulletins" or "Durbars". Click on any issue to display a list of articles in that issue.
  • Search results are listed in order of the Search Rating, from highest to lowest. Clicking on the "Search Rating" column title will reverse the order to lowest to highest. Please note that the rating is a relative % score which reflects how closely the text in the article matches the words in the search.
  • To select any individual result, click on the page number to display a brief extract. Then select "View page" to see the article and use the "<Previous" and "Next>" options on the top menu to see the whole article, page by page. You can also use the "GO" button in the top menu to select any page in that Issue by page number
  • Pages can be viewed in "monotone" or "colour/halftone". The default for a new search is monotone but, after selecting colour/halftone, the pages will remain in that option until the "back to results" button is selected
  • The "Download" button will download any page as a screenshot (.png) into the Download Folder. Screenshots can be cropped and copied & pasted into other applications such as Word
  • To see the Contents List in any available issue of The Bulletin or Durbar (ie those still in print and available to purchase in hard copy), go to "Shop" on the top menu and choose "Bulletins" or "Durbars". Click on any Issue to display a list of articles in that Issue

Search Terms: In choosing words and phrases to enter into the search boxes, please note the following:

  • Search terms should contain as few words as possible.
  • If the search result is too large, filter the results or try adding more words.
  • Do not include common words such as: the, a, an, and, from, etc, as a large list of common words is excluded from the index. For example, searching on "Echoes from the North" as "All Words" or "Exact Phrase" will return no results. Searching in "Search Bulletins" for "Echoes North" will bring up two articles from Issues 2 & 3 containing reports from the Northern Branch with the sub-title "Echoes from the North".
  • Results are returned in the order of ‘best fit’ to the entered search words.
